The Research Process For Undergraduate Students: Journals

This libguide will help undergraduate students with skills required to find, retrieve and evaluate information on research topics

What is a journal?

A journal is a scholarly publication containing articles written by researchers, academics and other experts. They focus on a specific field of study.

The print journals are kept on the first floor in the library in alphabetical order by title.

Online journals are grouped in databases - see databases below.

Most journal articles:

  • are peer reviewed
  • have original research
  • focus on current development
  • written by various authors
  • cite other works and have bibliographies

Databases

Databases are information sources the library has subscribed to. Databases cover electronic books, electronic journal articles and other formats.

Some databases:

Open Athens/ Off Campus Access

You are able to access all the electronic resources in the library from wherever you are. From the library tab, click on electronic resources, Off campus access to register. Use SMU student email address.  After registering you'll receive a link on your email which will prompt you to create a password.

When accessing electronic journals/ electronic books, you'll need to authenticate yourself as a student, use the username received and password created every time an Open Athens signing screen appears.
